IELTS Reading Marking Process:

Each question in the reading task is worth one mark. For getting one full mark someone needs to write the correct answer. No marks for wrong answer, but it’s suggested to write an answer, even if you are not sure whether it’s correct or not.

The question may be in the form of one word, true - false, multiple choice, classification, fill in the blanks, two words, three words and many more. So its advised to read the instructions carefully. For Example: if the instruction say write ONE Word, then you must write one word only.

Spellings are also important. Most of the words you write comes directly from passage, so copy the spelling correctly. Write in good handwriting so that your answers can be read easily. In case of unclear handwriting, or individual letters written together, marks will be deducted/ not given.

To follow during IELTS Exam Preparation:

  • Its important to familiarize yourself with the exam format of IELTS Reading test. Ensure what you are supposed to do in each of the tasks- then only you will be confident and fully nearby for the test.
  • Try to practice reading as much as possible. For Example: Read articles, newspapers, magazines in English regularly. Keep yourself updated with the latest news and current affairs in English.
  • During reading books/ articles, note down the important words. Language pattern writers are using while writing. Check the pattern of writing organized in paragraphs, how the ideas are connected into sentences in passages and linked together. 
  • Skimming and scanning of the content is the most important skill. Don’t try to understand/ perceive the first time you read something. To check how the writer has organized information and then shortlist the topics sections which needs more attention.

To follow during IELTS Test:

  • It’s highly recommended to read the passages in order. Sometime, passage 2 and 3 are more complicated than passage 1. So try to complete passage one in 20 minutes or less than that, so you can get more time for passages 2 and 3.
  • It’s advisable to answer the question in numerical order as task follows the order of information in the passages.
  • Most tasks involve different reading skills like skimming, scanning to find the relevant post of the passages, than reading that post carefully to answer detailed questions.
  • You can write on the question paper. It’s a good idea to mark the text to show which sections are related to each task and question along with question numbers. 
  • It’s important to remember that there is 60 minutes time limit to enter all your answers onto the answer sheet. No extra time will be given to copy your answer to the answer sheet.
  • If you could finish before 60 minutes, then go back and cross check your answers are copied in the correct boxes.

At the End of test:

  • Both question paper and answer sheet to be collected at the end of the test.
  • The answers written on the answer sheet will be counted, question papers are destroyed after the test.
